International Car Insurance
International auto insurance is essential for any person who is going abroad, and is likely to use a vehicle there. Automobile may be owned by the insured, or may be taken on rent. Therefore, the person may require either an international car insurance, or international rental car insurance.
Accidents can never be predicted, and there can be several types of claims arising from any automobile accident. All these have to be covered through car insurance for international drivers. Coverage in auto insurances may be liability cover, or other covers such as liabilities from collision, third party claims, and any comprehensive coverage. Covering liability is mandatory. Liability here means injuries to or loss of life of all the passengers in the vehicle, as well as any losses to the properties affected in the accident. Collision cover is reimbursement of financial expenses related to vehicle such as repairs to the car. Claims under this type of cover are allowed even if the insured is at fault. Comprehensive cover includes other factors such as chances of the vehicle being vandalized, stolen, damaged due to war like conditions, or other natural calamities, etc. All these covers are considered while fixing the premium on any international auto insurance policy. Shipping the vehicle from one country to another is also risky and such risk may also be covered under international auto insurance.
Normally, any such international auto insurance contract should be entered into before the person who is traveling abroad leaves the country. If personal vehicle is being transported across the seas, this becomes all the more important, as it is necessary to show car insurance documents to the customs authorities. Destination where the care is offloaded also may differ from where it is to be used. This means that the overseas traveler should essentially have insurance showing the detail as well, as without it, the traveler may not be able to collect the vehicle and drive away in it.
A problem that any traveler going abroad, or any international student commonly faces is the difference in driving and safety rules, and the language in which the road directions are presented. Likewise, the signs commonly used in driving may be slightly different or affixed in a different position that the driver may not be accustomed to looking out for. Therefore, such an overseas traveler is likely to miss the signposts, which can lead to major accidents. IDP or the International Driving Permit offered by the US is recognized in many countries, though not all.
International car insurance is invariably expensive and these costs increase based on the type of vehicle that is being transported to another country for driving. This does not come down substantially even if the driver has impeccable driving record. But that does not mean that a bad driving record does not matter. A clean driving record always brings down the premiums on auto insurances, even if such discount is not very significant. It may therefore seem odd that a person would want to take his or her personal vehicle to another country. The logic is that it may be cheaper to buy such insurance rather than sell the comparatively new vehicle, which may result in substantial loss in the value of the vehicle. Foreigners can also take travel auto insurances through some travel agencies in places like Europe. Tickets for speeding can adversely affect the premiums on such overseas car insurances. Insurance companies study the statistics of accidents, and these statistics have shown that not conforming to speed limits is the cause of 35 out of every 100-car accident.
In so far as International rental car insurance is concerned, the companies that rent the cars provide relevant insurance. This, however, may not be adequate. Additional insurance may therefore be necessary, and this may have to be purchased. It is necessary to remember that auto insurance valid within the country is not valid abroad. Therefore, all the coverage that is taken for local risks need to be covered once more for similar risks abroad.
Getting information about the safety and driving rules of the country where the person intends to drive would help. Such information is available at various foreign embassies. Other general precautions such as taking a road map, and avoiding strangers or hitchhikers are a must.
International student car insurances are expensive for the same reason as any international car insurance, i.e., the student may not be conversant with the local safety and driving regulations. But owning or renting a car is essential for students who travel abroad. It is unlikely that students have enough monies to meet the financial burden due to any accident abroad. Even minor accidents may result in dents that cost something.
Having said that, there are car insurers who offer higher coverage at very reasonable rates. They operate alongside other car insurers who collect hefty premiums from international students. So it is a must that the available International student car insurance policies be studied thoroughly. Premiums may appear lower in comparison, but the insurance company may be offering less coverage for higher premium. Buying insurance for longer period automatically brings down the average cost.
Buying more types of coverage for older automobiles may be more expensive. At times, replacing it may work out cheaper than repairing it. Conversely, it may be cheaper to repair a newer vehicle, than replacing it. Therefore, insurance on new cars are costlier. Automobile insurers often offer products in which there is no variation in rates for longer term, not withstanding any accident and claims during that period. It is advisable to take longer-term policies. Students from abroad should ensure that they have valid international license for driving.
